The Last Spell is a turn-based roguelike made of epic final stands. By Tom Sykes June 03, 2021. The last spell review.
The last spell this is a game that you can find on steam's early access program for about 20 bucks I stress early access.
that means everything that you're about to see here including this review is subject to change so what is the last spell well it's a tactical RPG with rogue-lite elements it sort of reminds me of they are billions.
a mismatch of other games that I've played in the past so what this game boils down to is this you embark on a run you're given a couple of heroes like two or three.
you're tasked with defending the city that's about to be swarmed by the undead or monsters or whatever they happen to be and during the day you'll be able to assign workers to various buildings in your city to do various things.

The Last spell all Free
it's all turn-based it's real-time not like uh they are billions but in this game it's turn-based and you can go okay there are four workers I'm going to assign one to the mana.
pool so that I can restore mana to this hero and then I'm going to go and assign a worker to this building so I can dismantle it and get some gold or some materials that I can use during the build phase and then you can also.
again use money and resources to craft defenses you'll be able to buy equipment for your heroes like any typical RPG have slots like head slots chest slots weapon slots.
they can equip different gear and this gear also has a rarity and different stats to them so it's like they are billions but with RPG turn-based ex-commie style combat.
the last spell tips
then once you're done during the day you're going to assign your characters to the map somewhere outside of your city and put them hopefully in between the monsters.
the city the game will tell you what direction the monsters are coming from and typically it's either one direction or multiple directions.
sometimes you have to split your heroes up across multiple directions at that point it's pretty much game over at least it is in the early part of the game um the night time you have to destroy all of the monsters to progress.
the next day whenever the monsters get close enough to the city it starts instilling something called panic and panic will determine your score for that day so if too many monsters are inside your city.
the last spell free access
panic is just accrued a lot of overtime at night then your rewards for completing that night will be very low so your goal is to keep the monsters outside of your city keep your city safe.
then you'll get a really good score and then get some really good bonuses but just to warn you it's never going to happen in the early onsets of your playthroughs it's just.
you are set up to fail like any rogue light in at le, in the beginning, ing um I mean yeah there are some lights that um differ from that or don't put you in that situation.
give you the chance to win right from your first playthrough similar to that of say monster train but this game oh my gosh.
the last spell classes
it is just brutal it's just it's meant to be difficult not to be fair before you embark on a run you can enable easy mode and then enable things like extra money extra materials waves are 20 percent less I have 20 fewer enemies.
so on so there's that aspect to it if you want to make it slightly easier but it's still gonna kick your butt regularly at least in the early parts of the game.
because you just don't have access to everything um if you do manage to defeat all of the monsters at night for that day then the day will go back into you know build mode where you're going to be putting structures down.
with the gold that you've earned putting defenses down like walls and the like um I'm guessing there are actual buildings that will defend as in like shoot.
How long is the last spell?
the enemies but I haven't unlocked them yet all I can build is walls at this point like I said the game sort of sets you up to fail right from the beginning.
then as you unlock more things you'll have a better opportunity to defend yourself um so that's the general gameplay loop embark on a run get level one heroes um try.
survive the night when you do get to the next day build up um buy some materials or buy some equipment for your heroes you can level them up they've got like an uh I don't wanna use the word tech t
skill tree because it's not it's just there's a tier-one tree you pick one tier one skill they level up again you pick a tier two skill and so on um and then you're given maybe five different passive bonuses like um plus 10 to accuracy.
What is a rogue light game?
plus three to attack or whatever and there are rarities to these skills too so um you know you'll be given just like with equipment rarities to different, uh you know picks so you may.
want accuracy but oh look this skill is uncommon so maybe I might want to take that instead it gives me slightly better bonuses but not to the stat I prefer you know what I mean so a lot is going on here.
The artistic style is fantastic um I like the overall feel of combat and the interface is pretty well laid out to where you don't get confused there are reminders on the left side.
the screen saying hey you know you still have this left to do oh you still got action points on this character are you sure you want to end your turn for you know stuff like that.
How do you play Griftlands?
that so like everything about it is really good my only complaint is the difficulty and um just again the game will set you up to fail and games themselves take.
a while to complete um the fact that it's turn-based and the fact that you've got multiple heroes to manage you know like an x-com their action points their movement points.
so on one night can easily take you 10-15 minutes because you're sort of planning out everything you know you've got 20-plus enemies coming at you so you need to plan carefully what you're doing with your heroes what abilities they're using.
so on so it's just going to take time for you to you know to come up with a strategy to combat this large horde and that will take time so and that could be you know an upside or a downside.
How do you spell Let's play?
I think it's a downside to those people that um only have 10 15 minutes to spend on any given run in a rogue-lite and just want to bust through something real quick this is not it this is a rogue-lite but it's gonna take you well.
complete one run uh you know again you're gonna die quickly probably like day two or three on your first couple of runs but um as you die and as you get defeated.
there are two different areas like two different mystic creatures there's like light and dark you can spend these soul essences whatever in the dark area to unlock new stuff.
then you can also um complete achievements on the light essence side of things to unlock new abilities and new buildings and the likes so there's like achievements that you'll be uh trying to earn as you play.
How do you play slipways?
you'll unlock new stuff on the light essence side of things so again it's got a roguelike element it's got this turn-based combat um it's really good um I can see why it has very positive reviews on steam my only real concern are those.
that want to play a roguelike or rogue-lite and expect the ability to win on their first playthrough it may be difficult but that may be what they want but in this game, I can't see anyone winning this on theirs.
the first playthrough I'm sorry I made it to day two slash day three on my first playthrough it's difficult um I was not playing easy mode however I played it on the normal mode.
just to get a feel of the general flow of play I probably will tone it down to easy mode at some point just to see if I can get further but I do recommend this one.
What means Roguelike?
I just want to warn anyone that's buying into this game that it's not a quick run it's not like rogue legacy where runs are completed in two or three minutes.
because your character dies repeatedly you know what I mean it's not like that um it's tactical it's gonna take some time to do um but I do like the base building I do like the combat I like the strategy involved I like the the the RPG elements.
